How to Dance in Heels

Updated: May 15, 2023

I think everyone can agree a woman in heels just adds that extra flare to an outfit. She not only looks stronger and more fierce, but confidence seems to pour all over her look. Well, I must admit that same feeling happens in dance, especially when you add a pair of heels to some bomb choreography.

For some, dancing in heels can be scary. Which can make a lot of ladies shy away from ever putting them on in the first place. But, just like with most things, you just have to practice practice practice! dancing in heels is an art and it takes technique, skill, and practice. It is important to have a great instructor and someone you can trust to teach you and encourage you along your journey. But, I promise you their is an adult dance class that will help you along your journey.

So, be patient with yourself and embrace the journey. There really is no journey like it!

Now, learning how to dance in heels involves:

  1. Having a great instructor for your adult dance class

  2. Patience with yourself and finding a comfortable adult dance studio

  3. Finding the right heel to wear to your heels dance class

  4. Understanding your body and movements in dance fitness or heels dance class

1. The Instructor

We talked about having a great instructor earlier. And let me tell you, this is so important. Heels dance can be fun and exciting with the dynamic moves you learn and the feminine choreography that accompanies the intricate musicality created by choreographers. Choreographers spend hours sometimes creating a piece that specifically helps women feel feminine and confident. So, finding an instructor that encourages you to feel that way is very important. Every teacher is different has. A different style. Of course find your favorite, but understand it can take time to find an instructor that you love, so have fun with taking different classes and exploring the different styles! There are so many all around the world. And, at My Heels On, we love working with beginners in our classes. We create an environment that is encouraging and fun to help all levels grow.

2. Be Patient

Learning to dance in heels requires patience. Rome was snot built in a day! I know we live in a "get everything quick" world and that is amazing especially when it comes to buying something we need online. But, when it comes to dancing in heels you must learn the art of patience. Being patient with your yourself, the class, and the instructor. So many ladies come into class and want to miraculously turn into a YouTube sensation. Please note the time, effort, money, and skill that individual had and continues to pour into being a great dancer! It is hard work and takes consistency. One thing I recommend is recording yourself along your journey to see how much you grow.

3. Find the Right Heel to Wear

How do you find the right heel to wear? Great question! And yes, your heel matters and it really depends on what is comfortable for you to walk and dance in while in class. Here are a few tips that can help you find the perfect heel for dance class. The first thing to look for is the height of the heel. If you are brand new to walking in heels look for a heel that is about 2 inches tall. Then, pay attention to the height of the actual heel. Try to find a heel that covers your entire ankle and your entire foot. This important because it helps keep your ankle safe and strong inside of the shoe as you dance. Lastly, I encourage you to try the heel on and walk around in them. Check to see if they hurt, move around, have too much extra space, or even come off! You don't want that to happen!

Heels dance class will help you in many ways if you stay consistent and add these little steps along the way. Take your time and find an instructor you mesh with even is they aren't the most popular ones at the time. Be patient with yourself and understand dancing takes practice and pushing your body to do new things. Lastly, find the best heels to suit your needs and level of comfort! If you are looking for different heels I recommend, then try these out!

4. Understand Your Body

Technique is very important in dance. It isn't EVERYTHING, but it is important and can help you grow into a move skilled dancer. Plus, techniques helps you understand your body placements and movements! When you are in class and an instructor taps the ball of their foot and switches position of that both feet, with proper technique and training you may recognize that as a ball change. Which, this can really help you in understanding certain moves in choreography and executing them. So, keep taking classes and growing your dance vocabulary!

Also, don't be afraid to record yourself! Recording yourself will allow you to see what you "really" look like on camera! Sometimes we think we look worse tan we actually do. The camera can really give you a greta opportunity to see how you look when you execute choreography.

What are the easiest heels to dance in?

When choosing what heels to wear for your heels class, it's important to find a pair that will be comfortable and provide support. Avoiding pointed toes and opting for a more rounded toe may help alleviate some of the discomfort associated with wearing high heels. With practice and dedication, you'll soon be strutting your stuff in those stylish stilettos like a pro! Before heading to your next heels class, think about what type of look you want to go for—do you want something sleek and sexy or fun and funky? This way, you can easily decide what type of outfit would go well with what type of heels. If you’re feeling adventurous, try experimenting with different styles such as kitten heels, ankle boots, or wedges.

Whatever you choose, just remember that comfort should always come first when selecting what heels to wear!
